Zinnia Planting Instructions

BACKGROUND

In our service on March 1st, we celebrated the beautiful fact that in Christ, flourishing is possible! As we talked about Jesus’ Parable of the Sower, we saw that when the seed of God’s Word is planted in the soil of a heart who hears and understands (accepts/receives) it, we grow and begin to experience the life of thriving God intended for us.

The Zinnia seeds we handed out are meant to serve as a reminder of this truth! As the plants stat to grow, and as they eventually begin to produce flowers, we pray it will encourage you to continue to “tend the soil” of your heart and embrace the good life Jesus has for you.

PLANTING OUTSIDE IN APRIL (BEST METHOD)

For the very best results, wait until April 1st, then plant according to these instructions:

  • Pick a sunny spot in your flowerbed (or in a pot on your patio/balcony). Full sun (at least 6-8 hours/day) is best.

  • Poke a series of small holes in the soil with your finger. The holes should be 1/4” deep (very shallow!) and about 8 inches apart.

  • Drop several seeds into each hole and lightly brush a thin layer of soil over the seeds.

  • Keep the soil moist (without flooding), especially the first week.

  • After the Zinnias flower, cut off the old flowers to encourage new flowering.

  • Enjoy!

STARTING INSIDE (IMPATIENT METHOD)

  • Fill the compostable pot with potting mix (or garden soil if you don’t have potting mix).

  • Poke a small hole about 1/4" deep in the soil with your finger.

  • Drop several seeds into the hole and lightly brush a thin layer of soil over the seeds.

  • Keep the pot in the sunniest place in your home and keep the soil moist.

  • After April 1st, carefully transplant the Zinnia into a sunny spot in your flowerbed (or a pot on your patio/balcony) OR just plant the compostable pot directly in the soil.

  • Enjoy!
